The purpose of this research study is to identify possible genes that may increase the risk of development of an aneurysm in blood vessels of the brain. This study is being sponsored by the National Institutes of Neurologic Diseases and Stroke and is a collaborative research project bringing together neurologists and neurosurgeons from the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Male and female volunteers over the age of 18 who have a family history of brain aneurysms may be eligible to participate in this research study.
Participants will be contacted by mail once a year for five years to update the medical status of the participant and their family members.
What is involved in this research study?
Qualified participants will be asked to come to Mayo Clinic once for approximately a one-hour visit. This visit consists of an interview that will include a review of the family history of any aneurysms as well as the collection of a small blood sample. If unable to travel to Mayo Clinic this interview can be done over the telephone and the blood sample collected in your home at a time that is most convenient for you. Other members of your family who have been affected with a brain aneurysm or bleeding into the brain may also be asked to participate in this study.
