Amyloid Beta Protein in Typical Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease -- Genetic risk/extended-family study

IRB Number:

887-98

Trial Status:

Open for Enrollment

Why is this study being done?

This study is being done to evaluate a test for Alzheimer?s disease that could help improve:

  • the accuracy of diagnosis;

  • predict who might develop the disease;

  • help monitor treatment; and

  • improve understanding of the disease.

A protein called amyloid is deposited in the brains of all patients with Alzheimer?s disease. This protein can be measured in the blood. Researchers are trying to find out if amyloid blood levels are high and decrease in the blood as the disease develops. It is known that when patients have the disease the blood levels may be normal or low.,It is also known that some genes and age increase amyloid blood levels. In this study Mayo researchers hope to find other genes that increase the levels.

About extended families: Some extended families of participants will be asked to take part in this study. Both families with high and low levels of amyloid in their blood will be asked to take part, as well as some families with strong family histories. The researchers will not know the blood test results of the families that are asked to take part. These families will:
  • have a blood specimen of 1½ tablespoons collected by a needle in a vein in their arm;

  • have their a medical history reviewed;
  • and
  • do a short memory test.

Relatives that might be asked to take part include: parents, brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents and people married into the family. Each member of a family is free to make his or her own decision whether to take part, and all participants must be over the age of 12.

Because the genetic tests in this study are not used for regular medical care, participants will not be told the results of the test(s). The test results will not be put in their medical records either.

Who is Eligible to Participate in the Study?

Families with at least two living siblings willing to participate and with at least two family members affected.

Minimum Age:

12
