Sibling's with a History of Stroke Sought for Study

IRB Number:

1082-99

Trial Status:

Open for Enrollment

Phase: I

Why is this study being done?

The purpose of this research study is to try and identify the genes that increase the risk of developing a stroke.

Genes influencing cholesterol, blood pressure, clotting and other as yet poorly recognized factors may increase the risk of having a stroke. Stroke is a common and often devastating condition. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted and brain tissue is deprived of oxygen and nutrients.

Every year about 750,000 Americans experience a stroke; about 160,000 of these people die. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and only cardiovascular diseases and cancer cause more deaths annually in the United States.

Who is Eligible to Participate in the Study?

Male and female volunteers over the age of 18 who have had a stroke and has a living brother or sister who has had a stroke.

Additional Requirements / Information

All participants will be asked to donate one small sample of their blood to try and determine why stroke tends to run in families. A home health care agency will be available to the participants to obtain this blood sample. At least one living sibling who has also had a stroke will be asked to participate in this research study as well.

Visit the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) for a more comprehensive listing of clinical trial information.
