IRB Number:

06-006507

Trial Status:

Open for Enrollment

Phase: I

Why is this study being done?

The purpose of this study is to determine whether encouragement to walk faster and feedback on walking speed during inpatient rehabilitation can improve recovery of walking speed in people who have experienced a stroke. The results of this study may help doctors and therapists understand the ways in which walking speed can be improved after stroke.

Who is Eligible to Participate in the Study?

1. First admission for stroke rehabilitation
2. Unilateral hemiparesis (less than or equal to 4/5 hip flexion and ankle dorsiflexion)
3. Free of medical complications that may interfere with progress for walking or follow-up
4. Able to follow simple directions
5. Age greater than or equal to 35 years
6. Able to take 5 steps with not more than maximum assistance of one person

What is Involved With this Study?

During inpatient rehabilitation subjects will receive the usual and customary rehabilitation treatment, with the addition of verbal encouragement and timing of a 10 meter walk once each daily physical therapy session in the subjects randomized to the treatment group.
Walking speed over 10 meters and walking distance in 3 minutes will be measured in all subjects twice during inpatient rehabilitation (after randomization and just before dismissal) and again at 3 and 6 months after dismissal, as able.

How long will the Study run?

Subjects will be assesses twice during inpatient rehabilitation (after randomization and just before dismissal) and again at 3 and 6 months after dismissal, as able.
