This study is being done to identify individuals from families that have experienced one or more instances of colon cancer, in order to study these families in detail. The current understanding of the environmental and genetic factors that contribute to the development of colon cancer are poorly understood. By carefully evaluating a large number of families that have experienced one or more instances of colon cancer it may be possible to identify factors (environmental, genetic or both) that lead to increase risk of colon cancer. The Mayo Clinic and other medical centers are working together to create a National Cancer Institute Cooperative Family Registry for Colon Cancer Studies, which consists of gathering together information and biological specimens (blood and tumor tissue) from carefully studied families with colon cancer in order to facilitate colon cancer research.
-Diagnosed with colorectal cancer under age 50 years
-Diagnosed at any age and have two first degree relatives (parents, brother, sister, children) with colorectal cancer
-Diagnosed with colorectal cancer and patient's family has a known genetic condition that can cause colorectal cancer
-Completion of questionnaires
-Telephone interview
-Blood sample collected
Patients will be in this study for as long as this project remains active. The National Cancer Institute Cooperative Family Registry for Colon Cancer Studies is intended to be a resource for many years into the future. This registry will be most useful if the information can be updated on a regular basis. Research staff will contact the patient to ask about health, health practices and family history. This contact would be initiated by mail, and with a patient's permission, may also include a telephone call. The research staff anticipate asking for this information about every 3 years for as long as this project remains active.
