Effect of Insulin Sensitizers on Lipid Metabolism in Obese, Dyslipidemic Subjects with Type 2 Diabetes

IRB Number:

1290-03

Trial Status:

Open for Enrollment

Phase: I

Why is this study being done?

This research study is being done to learn about the effects of two medications for type 2 diabetes, pioglitazone and metformin, on triglyceride metabolism after a meal. This is important because elevated triglyceride levels after meals are associated with increased risk of heart attack.

Who is Eligible to Participate in the Study?

Men or women between the ages of 30 and 70 diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes may be eligible to participate in this research study.

Minimum Age:

30

Maximum Age:

70

What is Involved With this Study?

Qualified participants will be put in one of 3 groups by chance (as in the flip of a coin). You will be assigned to receive pioglitazone, metformin or a placebo using a computerized selection process.

If you are assigned to receive pioglitazone or placebo, neither you nor the investigators will know which of these two you are taking because the pills will look identical. A third group will receive metformin at a starting dose of 500 mg daily; members of this group will know that they are receiving metformin because the tablet has a different shape and size.

How long will the Study run?

Participants will be enrolled in this study for up to 18-19 weeks.
