Minimally invasive staging of lung cancer

IRB Number:

1739-04

Trial Status:

Open for Enrollment

Phase: II

Why is this study being done?

This study evaluates a novel, minimally invasive technique for determining whether lung cancer has spread to lymph nodes. The technique, endobronchial ultrasound, uses a very small, 5-6mm, ultrasound transducer inside the airways to view and guide a biopsy of lymph nodes in the central chest (mediastinum). The procedure is compared to existing techniques such as standard bronchoscopy, endoscopy and surgery.

Who is Eligible to Participate in the Study?

Adult patients with known or suspected lung cancer.

Minimum Age:

18

Maximum Age:

100

What is Involved With this Study?

Patients will undergo standard bronchoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound. During these procedures while the patient is sedated, the ultrasound bronchoscope will be passed into the breathing tube to look for lymph nodes. If any lymph nodes are found, ultrasound will be used to guide a thin needle into the lymph node to obtain a biopsy.

How long will the Study run?

2 years
